CAIROLI TRIUMPHS FOR 6th TIME IN HOLLAND
4 May, 2014 - Valkenswaard, Netherlands - MXGP of The Netherlands - MXGP class
Seven-time FIM World Motocross Champion Antonio Caroli showed just why he’s #1 during the MXGP of The Netherlands at Valkenswaard, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider winning the event for the sixth time, and the fifth in succession.
The ETS Racing Fuels fueled rider demolished the field in almost every session, and if not for a front wheel failure during the opening race, may have completed a clean-sweep of the event.
Holding a comfortable lead during the opening race, Cairoli appeared to be struggling with a problem over the closing laps, revealing post-race that he’d been battling a broken front wheel.. he still managed to finish third!
In race two though he was back to his dominant best, winning the race comfortably to claim his sixth race win of the year and top points for the round, in the process he also extended his championship lead by 31 points over Yamaha’s Jeremy van Horebeek.
“For sure it was my goal to win here today and I’m happy with my 3-1 and especially for the championship. I was going for my sixth win here and Jeffery [Herlings] was going for his fifth. We both love riding in the sand and we really enjoy this kind of surface.”
Cairoli was also safely out in front and unaffected by a pileup of riders in the second moto that took out his close rival Gautier Paulin.
“I am sorry that Gautier went out and I hope he will be back racing very soon,” he said.
Asked if he had taken risks in nursing the bike home in the first moto, Cairoli said: "It could have been dangerous on the landing on some of the jumps but I was trying to control it and hoping that everything was going to go well.”
